The Cretan zelkova, also known as abelitsa (Zelkova abelicea), is a native tree of Crete that typically reaches a height of 3-5 metres, or it can take on a bush-like form, reaching up to 1.5 metres.

The flowers of the Cretan zelkova are small. It typically thrives in mountainous regions, with a more significant population found in the White Mountains.

The tree is not facing extinction, but it is considered vulnerable, primarily because the Cretan 'katsouna,' a traditional staff used by livestock farmers for animal management, is crafted from its wood. Additionally, overgrazing and fires have further contributed to its decline.
