The underwater topography of Crete, portrayed in a three-dimensional map, unveils a remarkable subaquatic landscape. Near the coastal areas, the ocean floor is not very deep because, during the last ice age, it was dry, with the sea resting 120 metres below its present level. The islands surrounding Crete, particularly Gavdos, emerge as ridges of expansive underwater mountains. The scene around Gavdos is particularly striking, with depths plunging to an impressive 4,500 metres.

The coastal regions of Crete showcase a rich array of ecosystems. Rocky bottoms serve as natural reserves, providing a habitat for numerous clinging organisms. Areas adorned with sea plants resemble enchanting underwater meadows. Soft bottoms, comprising mud, sand, or gravel, offer secure hiding places for various species. Throughout the coastal zone, you'll encounter a plethora of hideouts, caves, and protruding rock formations. The way the animals and plants residing here have adapted to their environment is truly remarkable. The repertoire of shapes and colours in this coastal haven seems boundless.
