Archaeological Site of Archanes

Histor. & Archaeological sites

ABOUT

Tucked inside a small, enclosed valley, just 15 kilometres south of Knossos, lies the Minoan city of Archanes with its palatial complex. This is one of Crete’s most important archaeological areas, where human presence can be traced continuously from the Late Neolithic period all the way through to historic times.

The long duration of use of both settlement structures and burial monuments makes this site a truly rich mosaic, reflecting varied aspects of community life and activity.

During the Late Minoan period, Archanes reached its peak, marked by the reconstruction of lavish palaces and the dominance of the so-called “pax minoica”, the peaceful era of Minoan supremacy.
