Venetian Castle in Charakas
ABOUT
The Venetian castle in Charakas, built at an altitude of 310 metres, offers a panoramic view of the village and the wider region. While the exact date of its construction remains unknown, the ruins suggest two distinct phases, with the second phase clearly dating back to the 14th-century Venetian period.
The castle was part of a feudal complex, strategically placed for control over the area. After the Ottoman conquest, it may have been used briefly by the Turks, but was soon abandoned.
Its defences include a double enclosure, towers, and a long rectangular structure with rooms and a rainwater collection system. You can still see the foundations of other buildings and the church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour.
The architecture follows the natural contours of the land, making the castle a brilliant example of smart military planning for its time.
