The Magnificent Church of the Transfiguration of Christ in Kalives
ABOUT
Built in 1501, according to an inscription above its entrance, the Church of the Transfiguration of Christ is located in the Agkavanes area, south of Kalyves in Apokoronas.
This single-nave, barrel-vaulted church follows Venetian architectural principles, featuring pointed windows and doors. It is believed to have been part of a larger monastic complex, remnants of which include a building, a storage facility, and a watermill.
The church stood at the heart of fierce battles between Ottoman forces and Cretan revolutionaries in 1878. In 1896, it was set on fire during the Ottoman retreat after the battles of Vamos.
It was restored in 1989.
