Ramni, Chania: In the Embrace of the White Mountains

Cities & Villages

ABOUT

Tucked away in the Municipality of Apokoronas, Ramni is a picturesque village that gazes not towards the Kiliaris valley like its neighbours, but instead turns its face proudly to the White Mountains and the old mountain passes leading to Kyriakoselia and Kares.

The name of the village may be linked to the ancient city of Ramnous or Rhamnous, according to Austrian traveller Franz Sieber. Other historians, however, place the ancient city further west—either on the Tigani Peninsula or near Chrysoskalitissa.

What’s certain is this: in Ramni, time slows down. Traditional cafés serve up small plates of local delicacies, perfectly paired with a glass of raki. A stop here offers not just rest, but flavour.
