Kalamitsi Alexandrou: A Quiet Village and a Very Unusual Cave

Cities & Villages

ABOUT

If you're in the mood for a place that stays true to its roots, where not many permanent residents remain, but you can still enjoy authentic Cretan dishes in a charming village café, Kalamitsi Alexandrou is worth a stop.

In the area, you’ll come across a large Ottoman-era water cistern, known locally as Softas, while the old primary school, though no longer in use, stands as a protected historic monument.

A little way outside the village, perched on a hillside overlooking the Vryssanos valley, is the cave-like chapel of Agios Antonios. On the southern edge of the churchyard, there's a stone bench carved into the natural rock—and at its end, you’ll find a carved monster figure, with striking eyes and teeth. The sculpture may have been created by a hermit who once lived in the area.
