Modi: Once Home to the Ancient City of Modaia
ABOUT
Built at an altitude of just 80 metres, Modi has a history that reaches back to ancient times, as archaeologists believe this is where the ancient city of Modaia once stood.
The village's modern history is marked by resistance and sacrifice, especially during the German Occupation, as commemorated by the War Memorial in the village square, at the top of the hill.
Here you’ll also find the Ecological and Religious Park of Agios Gerasimos, home to the church of the same name.
Modi has a strong tradition in education. In 1884, in the area of Pezoulia, between Modi and Gerani, the first primary school in Crete outside an urban centre was founded after the Ottoman rule.
This is where renowned Cretan writer Ioannis Kondylakis once taught. The school building has been declared a protected historic monument.
