If You Want to Try Snails, Head to Archontiko!

Cities & Villages

ABOUT

Archontiko offers visitors stunning views, perched on the edge of the ridge leading to the Minoan palace of Galatianí Kefala.
Even today, one can still trace the ancient cobbled road that started from the Minoan palace of Galatas, crossed Arkalochori, ran through the plain and the “Peratostrata” of Panagia, and continued toward the sacred cave of Arkalochori and other settlements that once flourished across the area of the present-day municipality.

The locals are passionate about snails, known in Crete as chochlioi. The village’s “Chochlidovradia”—an evening dedicated to snails—is famous across the region and takes place every July, organised by the local cultural association.

You can sample this delicacy in a variety of styles, and enjoy the Cretan feast that always follows!
