Church of Saint George in Lyttos (Xidas)

Churches

ABOUT

The location of Tzeneralido, near Lyttos, a village in the Municipality of Minoa Pediada with a distinct historical identity, hides a real treasure.

Here stands the single-nave barrel-vaulted church of Saint George, known for its remarkably well-preserved fresco decoration.

According to the Municipality of Minoa Pediada, the iconographic programme survives intact and includes scenes from the Evangelical cycle, depictions of saints, and twelve episodes from the life of Saint George. The frescoes are dated to 1321, based on a founder’s inscription located on the west wall.

The style of the frescoes is strongly influenced by Palaiologan art, which is known for its sculptural rendering of figures and their vivid motion.

On the exterior, at the western façade, the church’s main entrance is framed by a carefully constructed doorway, above which are embedded glazed ceramic plates set in a cross-shaped pattern.
