Gazepis Mill: A Protected Monument
ABOUT
At the entrance of the village of Nipiditos, stands a 19th-century windmill, which remains a landmark for the residents of the surrounding villages.
Its first owner was Mathios Apostolakis, a wealthy merchant known by the nickname “Gazepis”, which in Turkish means “the indignant one.”
The mill was built near Apostolakis’ inn, in a strategic location, once a main passage, where the winds were ideal for its operation.
Later, during the German Occupation, when it had passed into the hands of Mathios’ son, the building became a meeting point for the locals who were forced to work on compulsory projects for the German forces in the area.
Shortly after the end of the war, in 1950, the windmill was repaired, and a few years later, ownership passed to Gazepis’ grandson.
However, the rise of modern factories soon led to its permanent closure.

The tip of Local!
Today, the building has been declared a protected monument by the Ephorate of Modern Monuments, though it suffered damage in the 2021 earthquake.
