A Drop of History in Kounavi

Cities & Villages

ABOUT

Eltynia, Eltina or Eltynaia — this was the name of the ancient city where today you find the villages of Kounavi, Katalagari, Peza and the settlements of Zagouriani and Komes.

Kounavi is a large village, with many of its residents engaged in vine cultivation.

You can still discover stone wine presses, while in the areas of Skepasta Patitiria, Korakia, and Symianou Lakkos, there are well-preserved domed wine presses (linos).

A big festival takes place every year on July 27th, celebrating the Church of Saint Panteleimon.

The three-aisled Byzantine Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior has its own legend: each of its domes is said to have been built by one of five unmarried sisters.

A stop is a must at the Venetian-Ottoman bridge known as "Souli’s Arch."
