Meidani in Anogia serves as a landmark for the mountainous village within the Municipality of Rethymno, situated 36 kilometres from Heraklion.

Meidani is situated in Agios Georgios Square, where you can also find the bust of Ioannis Dramoudanis or Stefanogiannis, the Leader of the National Resistance during the period 1941-1994.

The square area is adorned with charming cafés that offer delightful sweets and dishes, featuring a large plane tree at its centre and vibrant flowers in pots.

It serves as a gathering spot for the residents of Anogia, providing a place for rest and relaxation.

In the museum, you can explore the most important findings from the long-term excavations that took place at the two archaeological sites. The use of advanced technology, such as 3D projection, holograms and the touch table, allows visitors to enjoy these findings in an impressive way. This digital museum transforms the space into a living “tour” place and transports visitors to the antiquity of the Minoan period, highlighting the role of Psiloritis and Idaion Andron in this great civilization.

Agios Yakinthos (St Hyacinth) in Anogia

Agios Yakinthos (St Hyacinth) in Anogia

For Anogia, and beyond, the chapel of Agios Yakinthos serves as a symbol of faith and love.

Once, the renowned composer Manos Hatzidakis and then-mayor Giorgis Klados decided to organise lyra competitions in the area.

Over the years, the events evolved, and with the contribution of Loudovikos of Anogia, they took the form of a special festival called Yakinthia – a unique cultural event for the region. Each year, thousands of people gather in the stone theatre of Agios Yakinthos, eager to experience the magic that permeates the area.

The church, constructed in 1998, reflects late Minoan architecture.

It's worth noting that St Hyacinth is revered by the Orthodox Church as the saint of love.
