Turkish Quarter / Splantzia
ABOUT
The Turkish quarter refers to the area surrounding the vibrant Splantzia Square, a spot beloved by both visitors and locals. Officially, the square is now called 1821 Square, in honour of the Greek Revolution, but the people of Chania still call it Splantzia – a name of Venetian origin that once described the neighbourhood where prominent Turks lived during the Ottoman occupation.
The Turkish quarter is a must-see destination if you find yourself in Chania. Right in the heart of the Old Town, Splantzia Square pulses with life all year round. Cafés and tavernas with a strong local flair set the tone, while music and casual conversation fill the air.
The main artery of the area is Daskalogianni Street, which connects Splantzia either with the Venetian harbour to the north or the modern city of Chania to the south. This is where your walk should begin.
