Mocenigo Bastion
ABOUT
Just opposite the Gate of Sand, in the Koum Kapi district of Chania, stands the Mocenigo Bastion.
Built right into the sea, its oreccione (central part) features a winged lion of St. Mark in relief, set inside a medallion, along with four coats of arms and the year 1591 carved in stone.
In 2025, the Greek Ministry of Culture announced a restoration project that includes structural reinforcement, stonework restoration, and protection of the monument. The works will be carried out by the Directorate for the Restoration of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Monuments, while the Chania Ephorate of Antiquities will conduct the necessary archaeological research in the intervention area.
Once completed, the bastion will be fully stabilized, restored, and safeguarded, ensuring the preservation of a monument of great historical significance and making it safely accessible to the public.
