The German cemetery, situated near Maleme airport in the prefecture of Chania, Crete, serves as the final resting place for 4,465 soldiers of the German Army. The majority of these soldiers were paratroopers who lost their lives during the German invasion of Crete in May 1941. The cemetery was established in 1974 under the initiative of former German commander Gericke. It serves as a burial ground for German soldiers from various locations across Crete.

The care and maintenance of the German cemetery near Maleme, Chania, Crete is entrusted to the Association for the Care of German War Graves (Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge e.V.), a private association based in Kassel. This association has been commissioned by the German Government and is responsible for the upkeep of similar cemeteries worldwide.
