Tabakaria: The Historic Tanneries of Chania City

Histor. & Archaeological sites

ABOUT

Tabakaria is a historic section of Chalepa, as it was the location of the tanneries in Chania.

The initial tanneries were built during the brief period of Egyptian occupation of the island, spanning from 1830 to 1840. The Egyptians sought to emulate the prosperity of the tanneries in Heraklion with the aim of generating wealth.

Leather goods enjoyed notable popularity, leading to the establishment of additional tanneries in the region. This development provided employment opportunities for workers from nearby areas.

World War II marked the demise of the tanneries, as the Germans introduced modern leather processing machinery, rendering the traditional establishments obsolete.

Presently, only three traditional tanneries continue to operate in the region.
