Kare: The Walnut Tree That Marked the Village

Cities & Villages

ABOUT

Situated at the base of Vrysina, the village of Kare is found 16 kilometres from Rethymno, perched at an altitude of 460 metres and inhabited by 79 residents.

Perched atop a hill and immersed in a lush green landscape, the small traditional village of Kare offers accommodation and a café. At its heart lies the Renaissance-style Holy Church of Protomartyr Stephanos.

Legend has it that Kare derived its name from a colossal walnut tree situated at its entrance. Additionally, historical records from the 16th and 17th centuries, from the Venetian era, make mention of the village in censuses.
