Saint Spyridon, Fortezza
ABOUT
In the imposing Fortezza fortress, stands out the cave-like church of Saint Spyridon, celebrated on August 11 and December 12.
According to the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH), the worship of the Saint in this location is recorded since the Venetian era, even though there is no mention of the church in any notarial acts.
During the Ottoman rule, it remained under the discreet jurisdiction of the hanoumisses of the purely Turkish neighborhood "Charakia".
Beneath Saint Spyridon, there was the Tarsanas (Turkish: tersane), the small Venetian shipyard, also known as the "Schiero".
