ABOUT

In 1867, Reouf Pasha, the Turkish governor of Crete, oversaw the construction of a fortress in Chania named after his son, Itzedin. The purpose of this castle was to bolster the defence of Chania, which served as the administrative seat of the Turkish authorities on the island. While the external structure of the castle still reflects its original architectural design, the interior has undergone significant damage and alterations due to its more recent use. Also known as ‘Kalami’, the castle served as a place of imprisonment for political prisoners until 1971.
