Church of St Catherine in Splantzia: A Unique Blend of History
ABOUT
Nestled in the alleys leading to the square of Splantzia, the Church of St Catherine, believed to have been built in the 16th century AD, may initially resemble a Catholic church, but it has always remained Orthodox.
Even during the period of Turkish occupation, while Agios Nikolaos was transformed into a mosque and St Catherine underwent changes, serving as a bakery and later as a machine shop, the local Christians persisted in their prayers and celebrations.
