Chania Municipal Market
ABOUT
The Municipal Market of Chania, situated on Chatzimichali Giannari Street, stands as one of the city's key landmarks. This substantial 4,000-square-metre building was constructed in 1913 on the bastion Piatta Forma.
Up until the conclusion of the 19th century, it functioned as an open-air public market. However, in 1908, the municipality opted to enhance its aesthetics by transforming it into a roofed market.
Today, it takes the form of a cross, featuring four entrances, and accommodates dozens of shops.
The official inauguration of the Municipal Market of Chania took place on 4th December 1913, and was presided over by the then Prime Minister of Greece, Eleftherios Venizelos.
During the German occupation, the Municipal Market of Chania served the needs of the occupying army and was utilised by the Germans.
