Cathedral of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary
ABOUT
The Holy Cathedral of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary is situated in Chania and was constructed on the grounds of an ancient church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, dating back to the 11th century.
The church is commonly referred to as Trimartyri, a name derived from its three aisles. The central aisle is devoted to the Virgin Mary, the northern aisle to Agios Nikolaos, and the southern aisle to the Three Hierarchs.
Internally, the church is renowned for its opulent portable and mural decorations crafted by Cretan artists, solidifying its status as one of the most notable historical monuments in Crete.
On 21st November, the church commemorates the feast of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary, an occasion that holds special significance. This day is not only observed as a religious event but also celebrated as a public holiday in the city of Chania.
