Spinalonga or Kolokytha? Discover the Untouched, Non-Touristy Side of Spinalonga

Adventure & Action

A summer outing with swims at two spectacular beaches is being organised by the Mountaineering Club of Heraklion on Sunday, July 6 for two different groups of hikers.

Here’s how the adventure unfolds:

“The route is designed to avoid tourist crowds and the noise of boat traffic.
Starting from Elounda, we hike across the Spinalonga peninsula (also known as Kolokytha), following old trails that lead us to the stunning Armos Vathy beach on the peninsula’s northwestern side. This peaceful bay features shallow, calm waters and a sandy-pebbled mix, with a southeast orientation and beautiful views of Elounda and the peaks of Oxa, Loutsi, and Askokefala.

The second group will stay here for about three hours to enjoy a swim and wait for the first group to return. The beach is remote, has no facilities, and requires ample drinking water.

The first group continues along the coastal path to Armos Skourgeto beach, the northernmost tip of the peninsula, directly across from the Spinalonga fortress, where the view is simply unbeatable and only visible from this angle.

From there, we walk to the northeastern edge of the peninsula, at a spot called Pelekiti, a small fjord-like sandy beach. The sea here carves a deep inlet into the land, forming a stunning natural cove with crystal clear turquoise waters, perfect for a protected swim. While Crete has many similar inlets, this one is truly unique.

Then, heading southeast, we reconnect with the main trail just past Armos Vathy beach, from where we begin the return journey.

Hiking boots are mandatory for all participants.
