Preparations are already underway for the international ski mountaineering race Pierra Creta, which is set to take place on March 6, 7 and 8, 2026, on the imposing Psiloritis mountain.

This unique ski mountaineering event, which has captivated athletes and spectators from all over the world, is being planned from the summer of 2025, with the support of the Region of Crete and the local municipalities.

In June 2025, a meeting was held at the office of the Governor of Crete, Stavros Arnaoutakis, with Maria Vassiliou, a member of the Organising Committee, and Nikiforos Steiakakis, President of the Social Cooperative Enterprise "To Mavro Provato", the organisation responsible for hosting the event.

During the meeting, the goals and prospects of the upcoming race were discussed. The focus this year is on strengthening winter tourism, broadening Crete’s tourism offering, and promoting the island internationally as a destination for alternative tourism and outdoor sports.

Stavros Arnaoutakis reaffirmed the Region’s continued support for initiatives that highlight Crete’s natural wealth and boost its outward-looking profile. He emphasised that Pierra Creta is a truly special event, combining sport, culture, and a deep love for Crete’s unique natural environment and traditions.
