Gouverniotissa – “Bulgarian Path”: A Scenic Hike

On Sunday, February 1st, Dromoi Zois heads out to Gouverniotissa and the Bulgarian Path.
As the organisers say:
“One chapel, two monasteries, trail and cobbled path, two hiking options – short or long – one with time for a coffee break, one without, wide open views for everyone, rough terrain for the experienced, gentler downhill for the beginners – this Sunday, we’ve got something for everyone. Time to get outside!”
The hike begins in Potamies, with a visit to the recently renovated Monastery of Panagia Gouverniotissa. From there, the group follows a narrow, unmarked trail up to the peak of Prophet Elias (565m), crowned by a small chapel. The panoramic view over the Aposelemis dam lake is more than worth the effort – a landscape not usually associated with Crete.
From the top, the route continues along a dirt road to the Monastery of Panagia Theogennitoros. Then, following the old Bulgarian Path, hikers descend towards Stalida, enjoying spectacular views over the northern coastline.
For those wanting a gentler hike, there’s an easier alternative: a visit to the charming village of Mochos, coffee in the lovely village square, and then a downhill cobbled path to Stalida – an ideal route for families with children.
Hiking duration: 03:30 (long route), 01:30 (short route)
Difficulty level: 1
At the end of both hikes, there will be free time for... spetsofai!
