On the most romantic day of the year, February 14, Mochos throws one of the wildest parties around.
It’s the revival of a traditional local custom, “Xynochondros and Mouzoudia,” and it takes place on the Saturday of the second Carnival week, organized by the Cultural Association of the village. The 2026 edition is already on the calendar.
The celebration involves the cooking of hot xynochondros – a traditional Cretan soup made from dried, crushed wheat cooked with milk – and a whole lot of ash-smudged disguises (that’s the “mouzoudia” part).

During the event, locals and visitors alike roam the village alleys in costume, with faces covered in ash, bringing a festive, slightly mischievous energy to every corner.
Then everyone gathers at the central square where the party really takes off – with Cretan music, dancing, and steaming cauldrons of xynochondros.
The soup, wine, and soft drinks are free, while beer and souvlaki are sold at symbolic prices.
