The Mountaineering Club of Heraklion is planning a new excursion on Sunday, January 11, 2026, this time in the Municipality of Hersonissos.

The organisers describe the route as follows:
“Our hike will begin in the village of Gournes Pediados. We will enter the Agia Anastasia Gorge and visit the cave-chapel of the same name. This is a beautiful, open V-shaped gorge, with low vegetation. Those who pay attention might even spot fossilised seashells along the way.

Just before the end of the gorge, high up on the right slope, there’s a cross marking the execution site of monks by the Germans during World War II.
At this time of year, small pools of water can be found in the riverbed. We’ll bypass these by following a dirt path along the edge of the gorge.

The hike will end in Kainourgio Chorio.”
