Do you know what “vourgies” are? Curious to find out? Or maybe you'd like to wander through a place where the women truly have fire in their hearts?
Follow us to Anogeia…

Weaving
This centuries-old tradition lives on in Anogeia’s textile craft, which remains one of the village’s core creative activities.
The richly decorated woven textiles are made from wool, linen, cotton, and silk, on traditional looms still found in many homes. The designs combine geometric patterns, scenes from nature, and glimpses of everyday life.
Among the standout pieces are woollen kilims, patanies (heavy blankets), and the vibrant vourgies—colourful bags once used at social events and by shepherds for carrying food. You'll also find cotton or linen sheets, towels, and silk garments.
Anogeian embroidery is famed for its colourful motifs, inspired not only by nature and daily life but also by Minoan and Byzantine patterns from Crete’s past. These works are often edged with delicate crocheted lace in intricate designs.

Handicrafts
The cultural wealth of Anogeia shines through the handmade creations of its women. Their craft developed during times of isolation and hardship, when self-sufficiency was essential.
Drawing on a deep well of tradition and cultural memory, Anogeian women have preserved an extraordinary expressive heritage in their handiwork. For visitors, it’s easy to find authentic handcrafted products that trace their roots back to ancient times.
