Hiking from Kavousi to Thripti
ABOUT
Several scenic hiking routes start from Kavousi, and one of the most beautiful is through the Mesonas Gorge. This easy hike leads you up to the village of Thripti, located at an elevation of 860 meters. Along the way, you’ll encounter several points of interest:
- The ruins of the Church of St. John, built by a hermit during the First Byzantine period, located in a cave west of the village, ending in a small cove by the sea.
- The old copper mine at Chrysokamino and nearby the "Theriospilo" cave, which contains impressive stalagmites.
- The famous ancient olive tree of Kavousi.
- Tholos Beach.
- The ruins of ancient Azoria.
- The small village of Thripti.
- The stunning Ha Gorge and the Thripti Mountains, known locally as "Aori," with rich vegetation and numerous rare species of animals and birds.
- The Church of Afentis Christos, situated at 1,476 meters, offering panoramic views of the Dodecanese Sea, Kasos, the Libyan Sea, and the provinces of Ierapetra and Sitia.
