Monumental olive tree of Kavousi
ABOUT
The Association of Olive Municipalities of Crete has declared this particular olive tree 'monumental' due to its large trunk size and location. It is located near the ancient settlements of Vrontas, Kastro, and Azoria, which date back to the Late Minoan IIIC and Archaic period (1350-500 BC). Various vessels and artefacts used for pressing olives have been discovered in these settlements
The tree is to be found in an area called Azoria on the way to the settlement of Avgos in Kavousi, Ierapetra, and belongs to Georgios Grammatikakis. It is a variety of mullberry grafted on a wild olive rootstock, and is locally known as ‘mouratolia’ (berryolive).
The trunk of the tree at a height of 0.8 m has a maximum diameter of 4.95 m and a circumference of 14.20 m and its base has a maximum diameter of 7.10 m and a circumference of 22.10 m.
