Platanias Shelter
ABOUT
This is an underground tunnel complex measuring 120 metres in length, made up of thirteen dead-end chambers, located beneath the Church of Agios Dimitrios. It was built between 1942 and 1943 by the German occupation forces, stretching from east to west, with two entrances/exits. Its purpose was to store ammunition, heavy weaponry, and military supplies, and it also served as the access point to two local machine gun nests.
Fifteen locals were conscripted for its construction, working every day for six months.
In the soft clay walls, you can still see engraved initials, dates, German crosses, swastikas, and other markings.
After the war ended, the shelter was looted and then used by locals as a potato storage space.
Later, residents donated personal wartime heirlooms, now displayed as part of an on-site exhibition.
The space has been open to the public since 2013, functioning as a place of historical memory, and there is no entrance fee.
