Lazaretto Islet
ABOUT
The islet of Lazaretto (also Lazareto) is situated opposite Nea Chora, and in the 17th century, the Venetians used it as a quarantine centre for Chania. It acquired its name from Lazarus, the patron saint of lepers in the Catholic Church.
The island boasts a beach with sandy and rocky seabed, and in certain areas, fragments of World War II bombs have been discovered.
Additionally, graves and remnants of buildings demolished by the Ottomans have been unearthed on the islet.
