German Bird
ABOUT
The Fallschirmjäger-Denkmal Monument stands as a German war memorial, erected to honour the German paratroopers who sacrificed their lives during the ten-day Battle of Crete in World War II.
The monument, referred to by Cretans as the German Bird or the Evil Bird, was constructed in 1941 by occupation forces.
The swastika was concealed with cement shortly after the liberation of Crete.
Situated approximately three kilometres west of Chania, on the road to Agioi Apostoli, the eagle atop the monument was severed during a storm on 28th November 2000.
