Chapel of Agios Ioannis, Sempronas

Churches

ABOUT

A winding dirt road connects the villages of Sempronas and Palaia Roumata.

What makes this route special is that it climbs the famous Apopigadi mountain—best tackled with a 4x4 vehicle—from where you get unobstructed views to the north and west of Chania.

At the top sits the chapel of Agios Ioannis, built in 1873. Right beside it is the spring "Gitemeni Vrysi", whose waters are said—according to local tradition—to be healing.

The chapel is celebrated on the evening of 23 June, the eve of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist, with a traditional festival organised by the local Cultural Association.
