Standing proudly outside the community shop of Sellia in the Municipality of Apokoronas is a bust commemorating a notable figure from the region.
This is Nikolaos Papadakis, also known as Daskalonikolas (1870-1944), who valiantly fought against the Ottomans in both Crete and Epirus.
As inscribed on the bust, he served as a volunteer chieftain, and his fellow villagers continue to honour his contributions to the struggles for freedom.

In the picturesque village of Gavalochori within the Apokoronas Municipality lies the Church of Saints Sergios and Bacchus, a splendid architectural treasure of the region. Marked by a marble inscription at its entrance, the construction of the church commenced in 1896 and endured for a decade.
The church commemorates its feast day on 7th October.

St John the Theologian Monastery in Aptera
At the heart of the historic city of Aptera lies the Holy Monastery of St John the Theologian.
Affiliated with the monastery of Agios Ioannis of Patmos, its earliest mention dates back to 1182, when Byzantine emperors granted significant swathes of land to the aforementioned monastery.
