The Gourouftakas–Liontari 2025 expedition kicks off on August 1st, 2025. This year, 40 speleologists from Greece, the UK, Ireland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia, Spain, the USA and Ukraine are taking part.
“The main goal is to reach the deepest known point ever explored in a Greek cave — at -1100 meters. Secondary goals include continuing the exploration of Gourouftakas and mapping Liontari cave using the DISTO-X2. According to older maps, Liontari has a depth of -1110 meters. Let’s see: which one is deeper? Gourouftakas or Liontari?
There will also be drone scanning to locate new cave systems, and a revisit to a previously explored vertical shaft known as LOC81.
We welcome everyone to join us at our base camp at 1650 meters altitude — for support and, of course, a friendly treat,” the expedition team reports.
