Adventure & Action

The Heraklion Mountaineering Club is organising not one, but two different outings this Sunday. Whether you’re in the mood for a gentle seaside walk or an adrenaline-fuelled rappel into a gorge, there’s an adventure waiting for you.

1. Afrathias Matala Coastal Hike

This is a relaxed walk along the Libyan Sea, with views that stretch out to the Paximadia islets shimmering in the distance.

The route begins at Afrathias Beach and leads to the small village of Kalamaki, the first pause of the day. From there, it continues to Kommos Beach for a second break, before heading south to the famous Matala. If you’re up for it, you can also explore the nearby Red Sand Beach (Kokkini Ammos).

Leader: Nikos Apostolakis
Hiking time: 4 hours
Difficulty level: 1 (easy)

2. Peristera Gorge Canyoning

This one’s for canyoning enthusiasts who have already completed the Club’s official training sessions.

Just outside the village of Christos in Lasithi, the Peristera Gorge may be compact, but it packs a punch: five rappels, the tallest of which drops 16 metres. It’s easily accessible with just a 5-minute approach on foot from the parking area, and about 25 minutes from the exit.

And yes, a swim in a nearby beach is part of the plan.

Two different moods, two unforgettable experiences. Take your pick—or go for both.
