With 60 works of painting and printmaking from its permanent collection, the Municipal Art Gallery of Heraklion welcomes August with a themed exhibition titled Eyes of August.
Taking its name from the poem Far Off (1914) by C. P. Cavafy, the exhibition seeks to capture the essence of one of the year's most beloved months—a time of escape, rest, carefree moments, renewal of body and spirit, and for some, a period of strenuous work under the simultaneously redemptive and punishing sun of the Mediterranean.
"And the eyes of August, deep and burning, scatter along the world’s shores his images, his truth."
— C. P. Cavafy, excerpt from Far Off (1914)
Running through August 28, 2025, the exhibition invites visitors to immerse themselves in artworks that touch the core of summer, the power of the land, and the calm of water. From harbours and boats to the slow rhythms of village life, August light transforms the natural world into a living canvas, where every moment holds a story or a memory.
The works on display come from donations by artists and the Ministry of Culture, featuring creations by:
