On Friday, January 30th, 2026, at 18:00, the opening of the painting exhibition by Haris Vailakis will take place at the Basilica of Saint Mark in Heraklion. The exhibition, jointly organised by the Municipality of Heraklion and the Municipal Art Gallery of Heraklion, will run until Saturday, March 14th, 2026

The artist, Haris Vailakis, has written about his work:
"I’ve been painting for as long as I can remember. But once I began working as an architect, painting became a necessary complement to my profession. I wanted to preserve the old buildings of Heraklion, which were being torn down to make way for apartment blocks. There were many of them, so I kept painting more and more, hoping something would remain. Over time, I grew to love painting just as much as my daily work. Gradually, the subjects that interested me expanded to include landscapes, still lifes, seascapes, and remnants of settlements from my travels across Crete and the rest of Greece. My painting is figurative with abstract elements, and I mainly work with watercolours and acrylics."
