Kolimbari Beach: Mind the Wind and Caretta Caretta Turtle Nests
Kolimbari Beach is situated in the eponymous area, known for its development within the municipality. Located on the Rodopou peninsula, the small bay has earned inclusion in the NATURA Network, along with the entire area. Named after the nearby village, Afrata Beach is around 1 kilometre away. A refreshment bar, parasols, and sunbeds offer shade just a few metres above the sea. The locals claim the seabed is perfect for diving enthusiasts.
In Afrata village, visitors can find tavernas to enjoy food or coffee after their time at the sea. Nearby Kolymbari is renowned for its fish tavernas. Northwest of the beach, the path to the Hellinospilios Cave begins, where significant archaeological findings, including prehistoric tombs, have been discovered. The trail is approximately 1.5 kilometres long and easily accessible.
While heading towards Afrata from Kolimbari, one can visit the historic Panagia Odigitria Monastery or Gonia Monastery, along with the Orthodox Academy. These sites hold significant historical importance for the island.
