ABOUT

Askyfou (or Askifou) is the first village encountered when journeying from Vrysses to Sfakia and comprises five charming neighbourhoods: Petre, Amoudari, Stravorachi, Goni, and Kares. With a profound history, the village witnessed a significant battle between the Turks and the Sfakians in 1821. In 1823, the village fell victim to a fire set by Hussein Bey.

An additional highlight of the area is a petite fortress, carefully maintained at the summit of the hill in the northeast of the plateau.

Being one of the highest villages in Crete, Askyfou offers accommodation and traditional tavernas, inviting you to relish the exquisite cuisine of the region, including the renowned Sfakian pies.

ABOUT

The museum was established by George A Chatzidakis, who, having experienced the horrors of war at a young age, sought to immortalise the heroic deeds of his forebears.

His vision was not only to honour their memory but also to kindle the curiosity of young generations in exploring the historical narratives of the area.

The museum's extensive collection, curated by George's son, Andreas, encompasses over 2000 artefacts from the period 1940-44, with ongoing additions that reflect the relentless and admirable efforts of the curator.
