Xyloskalo: The Samaria Gorge and the Throne of Zeus
ABOUT
Xyloskalo, situated at 1,250 metres, marks the highest point of the Omalos Plateau. From here, the famous descent into the Samaria Gorge commences, drawing thousands of tourists each year. Xyloskalo also houses a forest outpost and an information centre about Lefka Ori and the Samaria National Park.
On the opposite side stands the majestic Gigilos Mountain, soaring to a height of 2,080 metres. In ancient times, it was believed to be the throne of Zeus, who was born in Crete.
