Sternes Cave Shaft
ABOUT
In 2018, the Municipality of Sfakia was presented for the first time with the remarkable results of the expeditions conducted up to that point in the Sternes cave shaft. Since then, the Speleological Club of Crete (SP.O.K.) has continued the exploration every year, with international missions, and Greek-only teams during the challenging years of the pandemic.
The findings have been striking, with major discoveries that shed new light on the underground networks of the White Mountains.
The cave is located on the southern slope of Sternes peak, in the White Mountains, at an altitude of 2,085 metres. It bears the code name GSO 21, from the French team Groupe Spéléo d’Orsay, which conducted the initial exploration.
Its exploration requires specialised equipment and experience.
Each year, the team shares the latest findings from their mission.
