Roussospiti: The Balcony of Rethymno

Cities & Villages

ABOUT

Situated on the slope of Vrysina at an elevation of 300 metres and just 9 kilometres from Rethymno, the village of Roussospiti is home to 374 inhabitants. The settlement boasts numerous Venetian houses, a 17th-century fountain, and the Church of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary, adorned with several preserved frescoes, all set against a magnificent backdrop overlooking the Cretan Sea.

Roussospiti is often referred to as the ‘balcony of Rethymno’ due to its exceptional vantage point, providing unique views.

Nestled in the lower village, the Venetian fountain of Roussospiti is believed to have been constructed in the 17th century.

South of the village lies the Ligeri Cave, sculpted in Neogene limestone. With a corridor stretching 250 metres, the cave showcases mesmerising stalactites and stalagmites.
