Mt Vrysinas
ABOUT
To the south of Rethymno lies the massif of Vrysinas.
The church of the Holy Spirit now stands at the highest peak, but in the past, it was the site of a Minoan peak sanctuary, traced back to the Neopalatial period. Identified in 1963 by Paul Faure, systematic excavation occurred in 1972-1973, unearthing clay figurines and pottery. The oldest artefacts discovered date back to the 4th millennium BC, marking the conclusion of the Neolithic period.
