ABOUT

Mitropoleos Square is situated in the courtyard of the Metropolitan Church of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary, from which it derives its name.

In the 18th century, the square served as the cultural centre of the city, with the elementary school, boys' high school, and elders' institutions situated around it.

In the past, there was a sizable hall originally named Prince's Hall in honour of Prince George, the High Commissioner of Crete. However, it was later renamed the Hall of the Three Hierarchs and was utilised for speeches and ceremonies.

Later on, these structures were demolished, and the church of Megali Panagia and the square were reconstructed.
