Koumi: The Village of Livestock Breeders

Cities & Villages

ABOUT

Nestled at an altitude of 460 metres, at the base of a treeless slope known as Vrysina, specifically the so-called Kefala Koumniotiki, the mountain settlement of Koumi (or Koumoi) is situated just 15 kilometres from Rethymno.

The name originates from the Byzantine term ‘Koumoi’, referring to a makeshift shelter for the protection of small animals and poultry from predators. Historically, Koumi has been a livestock settlement renowned for its various livestock products.

During the Turkish occupation, Koumi witnessed significant battles and recorded heroic moments as a result of the militant movements of the time.

In close proximity to the village, there is a gorge and several caves, and the broader area is adorned with numerous churches and chapels. The parish church, Christ the Saviour, stands out with its masterful architecture, while the cavernous Church of Agios Antonios is particularly impressive.
