Kastelos Fortress, Varipetro
ABOUT
At the hill of Kastelli, Varipetro, the remnants of a walled acropolis from Hellenistic and Roman times are found. Following 961, the Byzantines erected a fortress on this hill, now only preserving a section of its wall and cisterns. The site was seamlessly integrated with a newer structure, an Orthodox monastery complex constructed in proximity to the fortress.
Offering panoramic views, the castle commands the fertile plain of Chania, extending to the coast, allowing complete control over the bay, beach, and overseeing the routes to mainland Chania and the southern coast. In the west, it maintains visual contact with the Byzantine fortress of Roka (Kissamos), situated 22.5 kilometres away.
