Gallou: A Forward-Thinking Village
ABOUT
The village of Gallou, with a population of 430, is situated at an altitude of 200 metres, approximately 4.5 kilometres away from Rethymno.
The settlement is referenced in Venetian inscriptions from the 16th and 17th centuries as ‘Galou’. According to tradition, the old Byzantine church, known as Panagia Galou or ‘galaktoktisti’, was constructed using milk instead of water in the building materials.
In the village square, you'll find the school that has been in operation since 1926, surrounded by a pine-covered area.
The village is highly regarded for its geographical location, rich traditions, and its close proximity to the University Foundation to the north, which is known for its active and forward-thinking initiatives.
To the east of the village, the Galliano Gorge takes centre stage, characterised by its lush vegetation and unique wildlife. Meanwhile, to the west of the village, you'll find the Monastery of Peter and Paul.
